Abstract: Experiments were conducted with the diphenylmethane-$^{14}$C-labelled polyurethane rigid foam "Baystrat" on the mineralization and uptake of labelled carbon during rooting of cuttings and layering in Baystrat blocks and by intact plants from soil/Baystrat mixtures. Baystrat was found to be highly resistant against microbial decomposition. During the initial phase of decomposition mineralization rates of 0.003 %0/day were registered, however, in a long term experiment in the soil the average mineralization amounted to only 0.3 %0/year. Due to this it can be concluded that only a very limited portion of receivable low molecular compounds areformed during the decomposition of Baystrat. In short term experiments (up to 60 days) leaves and stems of tomato, cucumber, and strawberry plants contained amounts of labelled carbon which represent up to 5 ppm Baystrat-equivalent in the fresh weight. However, in long term experiments (90 to 185 days) after additionof Baystrat to soil only about 0.1 ppm was detectable, but fruits showed less than 0.01 ppm.
